The Summer School in "Urban Mobility and Healthy Ageing: Innovations for a Sustainable Future" aims to equip international master's students in Urban Mobility with the skills to design, develop, and implement solutions that promote health and functional independence for individuals with reduced mobility or those at risk of mobility decline in urban environments.

The Course Framework

The Summer School consists of three interconnected learning phases:

  1. Online Component: 2 weeks, asynchronous

    • Introduction to mobility and ageing: key challenges, trends, and opportunities.
    • The impact of ageing on urban mobility: physical, psychological, and societal aspects.
    • Policy frameworks, urban planning, and inclusive transportation solutions.
    • Entrepreneurship and innovation in mobility for ageing populations.
  2. Face-to-Face Week 1: Problem Analysis – Lisbon

    • Visits to locations and case studies addressing mobility challenges faced by older people.
    • We create groups/teams with the objective to create and develop a new proposal.
    • Data collection and stakeholder engagement with urban planners, transport authorities, and ageing communities.
    • Collaborative efforts to define problem statements and pinpoint key areas for innovation.
  3. Face-to-Face Week 2: Problem-Solving and Pitch Event – Barcelona

    • Hands-on workshops fostering collaborative innovation to design feasible mobility solutions.
    • Expert mentorship from industry leaders, startups, affected associations, and academia.
    • Prototype development paired with business model creation.
    • Investor pitch event, where teams present and sell their proposals to a panel of experts. The group that secures the highest investment wins the final prize!

Bases:
Award for the best innovative solution about ageing mobility developed during UMAIS summer school

  • Purpose: This prize aims to recognize and reward the most innovative solutions related to ageing and mobility developed during the UMAIS Summer School: Urban Mobility and Healthy Ageing – Innovations for a Sustainable Future.
  • Eligibility: Only students officially enrolled in the UMAIS Summer School are eligible to participate.
  • Prizes: Two group prizes will be awarded:
    • First prize: 800 € (to be shared among group members)
    • Second prize: 200 € (to be shared among group members)
    Applicable taxes may be withheld in accordance with national tax regulations (IRPF). Prize amounts are gross values.
  • Group composition: Eligible groups must be composed of a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 members.
  • Evaluation process: The evaluation will take place on Friday, July 4th, and will consist of two stages
    • Investor session (July 4th morning): Each group will present their idea in a “congress- style” format to an audience of invited “investors”, who will be allocated a fixed virtual budget to distribute among the presented projects based on perceived potential. Investors will include representatives from public mobility administrations, associations, private companies, academic staff from UPC and the University of Lisbon, and researchers from CARNET.
    • Final pitch session (July 4th afternoon): Each group will deliver a 5-minute pitch presenting their solution and preliminary prototype, focusing on the innovative concept, umais.fmh.ulisboa.pt | 2 social impact, targeted problem and solution, and financial sustainability. A multidisciplinary jury will evaluate these presentations.
  • Evaluation criteria and weighting: The final score will be calculated based on two components:
    • Jury evaluation – 60% of the total score: The jury will assess the following aspects, each scored individually: Development stage of the solution, financial sustainability, social impact, relevance to ageing mobility and people with disabilities
    • Investor Evaluation – 40% of the total score: The “investment” each group receives will be normalized to consider the same weight per sector (private companies, academy, administration, associations) and converted into a score.
  • Jury composition: The jury will consist of: One professor from UPC, one professor from the University of Lisbon, one representative from EIT Urban Mobility, one representative from CARNET, one representative from an association or foundation focused on ageing or disability- related mobility.
  • Requirements: All required materials and deliverables must be submitted by the day before the evaluation, i.e., Thursday, July 3rd, to be eligible. All materials, pitches, and presentations must be submitted and delivered in English.
  • Disqualification: Projects will be disqualified in the following cases: Evidence of plagiarism in submitted materials or presentations, failure to meet the minimum attendance requirement, failure to submit deliverables by the deadline.
  • Intellectual property: The intellectual property rights of the submitted and awarded solutions will remain with the authors.
  • Jury decision: The jury reserves the right to: Declare the prize vacant, award a single prize, award the prize jointly (the monetary amount will be equally distributed among the winners), grant second prizes or special mentions without monetary value. The jury’s decision is final and not subject to appeal.
  • Award announcement: The final decision and announcement of the winners will be made on Friday, July 4th, following the conclusion of the final pitch session.

This Summer School is designed for:

  • Master’s students in Urban Mobility, Transport Engineering, Smart Cities, Public Health, or related fields.
  • Professionals interested in urban mobility innovation, healthy ageing, and entrepreneurship.
  • Innovators, designers, and entrepreneurs passionate about solving real-world urban mobility challenges.
  • Participants should possess a strong command of English (B2 level or higher).
